Beautiful building, amazing performers, and a broad variety of shows. Only recommendation would be to add an extra bar for drinks/snacks during intermission since by the time we got to the front the intermission was nearly over and we had to rush back to our seats. I'll also mention that photography/video on phones during a performance is strongly discouraged, though people can't help themselves apparently; the opera staff sit in the back and point red lasers at phones which are raised, and while I understand the reasoning, it is just as annoying seeing a red dot flickering around the audience as it is seeing a phone held up in front of you while trying to watch a performance. Phones should be outright banned, solving the problem.

Great burgers, excellent whiskey sours. Not a married man's place without the wife. I'll also add that the bartenders are absolute professionals. During a recent visit I inquired about a popular drink they were making and we were given two mini versions to test for free. That is salesmanship. Go here. Period. (But only with your wife if you're married).

I'm going to give 5 stars but say for the record I rounded up. The place has an excellent wine list, a great bar selection, and an incredible menu variety without too many options. The food and drinks are top notch, no question. Why the rounding up for a 5 star review? We had the shrimp bruschetta as a starter, and while there was certainly shrimp, there was no bruschetta. The bread was cold, not toasted in the least, and nowhere near expectation of bruschetta. If it were advertised as shrimp on bread then I would have chosen something else. All that said, I had the horse steak (incredible) and my wife had the fish. Both were exquisite. We'll go here again for everything but the bruschetta.

Specifically for the Rixos Lobby Bar, I'm not impressed. I like the hotel, but when we visited the lobby bar for drinks prior to dinner at another site I had much higher hopes of service than what we received. The seating area was smokey, waiters hard to wave down, and service was not quick for drinks or snacks. If it were rush hour then I'd understand, but most of the lobby was empty and we waited a long time for everything. I've been to the hotel for events in the past and everything has been great, which is why this experience was such a let down. If you're staying in the hotel and want a convenient snack/drink then not a problem, but don't go out of your way to go here for a pre-dinner outing.

Izmir Doner&Lagman House

Izmir! I love this place, hands down the best all around restaurant you will find. Yes, it is a chain, but I put it up there with Golpas on consistent quality of food (Izmir is Halal, so the big difference from Golpas is no alcohol). The doners, lagman, tea, and deserts are phenomenally way above what you would get in a stand alone restaurant, and again, this is a chain establishment. Everything is clean, the staff friendly, food comes out fast, and everything is delicious. We've had lagman, doners, pizza, appetizers, and deserts; both on site and delivered through Wolt, and each time they are delicious. Make this place a go-to if you want a solid meal. I'll also specially mention their "chopped" lagman; the noodles are minced and make eating lagman a new experience, and certainly less messy if you're afraid of sauce splatter. On top of that, they also provide a glass of free chai/tea with every meal. Exceptional hospitality.

There is great "date night" ambiance at Roast Beef, with low lighting, decent separation between tables, and an impressive wine menu. Drinks and food came quickly, with the appetizer coming out almost within 2 minutes of us ordering it. We had the tempura shrimp (was perfectly fried, but not much flavor without the sauces), the gnocchi, and veal medallions (absolutely delicious, tender, and perfectly cooked). I would not take kids here, but will probably return the next time we get a babysitter and find ourselves in that part of town.

The Chef

I've had a lot of good burgers in Astana and the ones at The Chef are contenders for some of the best. I ordered the Chef burger and my wife had the Steve Jobs. Both were excellent, with fresh ingredients, tasty bread for the buns, sauces which provided accentuating flavor to the meat, and a beef patty which was tender and well cooked. I plan to go back and sample all their other burgers soon, all of which are appropriately priced per their tastiness, averaging 4,000 Tenge each. As an added bonus the fries were delicious, with just enough frying so they were crispy and plenty of salt on top. The one thing I didn't pay attention to until the bill came was the cost of water; 1L of still water was 4,000 Tenge. I should have looked at the price in the menu first, but couldn't imagine a bottle of water would be that much. Considering the 10% service charge on top of everything, I will most likely stick with chai or something similarly cheaper for lunch drinks, or even just get burgers.

A nice place to stop when driving to Astana from anywhere up north. I've seen the monument many times, but the exit comes up surprisingly quickly and is easy to miss, in which case you would have to go a long ways to circle back and see the monument. I finally managed to slow down as I got closer, remembering it is about 15km from the ring road, and was able to take a quick look. The monument is huge and beautiful, matching the surrounding steppe with all the ponies you see in the fields while driving. The exit also has a paid WC as well as a public outdoor toilet, so it's worth keeping in mind as a rest stop.

I had a great meal here and will go back again to try some of the other items on the menu. I just happened to stumble upon Bee Cafe during lunch one day and everything we ordered was delicious, prepared quickly, and reasonably priced. We had Tashkent tea, two orders of pancakes/Blini, chicken ramen, and a cheeseburger with fries. Total was 13k. The thing that stood out the most was the complimentary flatbread we were served along with the homemade butter; absolutely fantastically tasty and fresh. After one bite my wife and I looked at each other and at the same time said "That is amazing".

This Happy Cake is part of a party/gift store, so at first it doesn't look like they have much selection at the small cake counter. I went here in search of a milk girl cake (light white icing with multiple thin layers inside) and did not see it in the display. Apparently there is extra storage in the back, so even if you don't see what you want then be sure to still ask in case it is in the other fridge. As usual at Happy Cakes, the packaging was robust and the cake delicious.
